EIFF preview – Our Day Will Come

We’ve been looking forward to last movie of EIFF day 2. Debut outing for director Romain Gavras.

Red-headed Remy (Olivier Bartelemy) is a social shy outcast, bullied even at home. Finally driven to breaking point, he lashes out and flees home, and so setting up an accidental meeting Patrick (played by a typically magnificent Vincent Cassel).

Patrick is equally outcast, and becomes an unlikely mentor to the easily led Remy, leading him on a series of progressively wild encounters.

As the impulsive violence escalates as the two embark on a road-trip. Patrick becomes increasingly unhinged, believing he is the redhead Messiah, and Remy torn between his shyness and Patricks influence. (Wonderful scene featuring Patrick and an orgie with three gorgeous ladies while Remy works in his sketch-book).

The movie is well shot and has a great soundtrack. Despite all this the story feels disjointed, especially the latter half. It feels like very well shot music video at times – perhaps reflecting the directors background. However this doesn’t take anything away from Cassel’s performance – if you are a fan you must see this movie. Love or hate it, some scenes will stick.

Our Day Will Come is screening on 17th & 20th June as part of EIFF.
